The Japanese Language has two particles
those tell about a place:
"NI" and "DE".

Particle
"NI"
is used
for
a place where
an object
is located.

tegami wa doko ni arimasu ka.
ie ni arimasu.
kono hon-o doko de kaimashita ka.
To:kyo: de kaimashita.
Where's the letter?
It's in my house.
Where did you buy this book?
In Tokyo.
Particle
"DE"
is used
for
a place where
an action occurs

watashi wa sensei dewa arimasen.
sensei wa koko dewa arimasen.
(sensei wa koko ni imasen.)
kino: sensei wa toshokan ni imashita.
sensei wa toshokan de nihongo no shimbun-o yomimasu.
kyo: watashi no tomodachi wa sensei o daigaku de mimashita.

I'm not a teacher.
The teacher isn't here.
The teacher was in a library yesterday.
The teacher reads the Japanese newspapers in the library.
My friend saw the teacher in the university today.

Exercise 2

Read the sentences and translate them into English.

When you use
verb wakaru (to understand)
you should use particle "GA"
ONLY .

NEVER(!)
use particle "o" with wakaru
INCORRECT:
~~EIGO-O WAKARU~~

Sore wa nan desu ka.

Kore wa watashi no atarashii hon desu.

Doko de kaimashita ka. Washinton de kaimashita ka.

Iie, Washinton dewa arimasen. To:kyo: de kaimashita.

To:kyo: desu ka. Anata wa To:kyo: ni imashita ka.

Hai, imashita.

Nihon de nani-o shimashita ka.

Nihongo-o benkyou shimashita.

Sono hon wa eigo no hon desu ka.

Iie, kono hon wa eigo no (hon) dewa arimasen. Roshiago no hon desu.

So: desu ka. Anata wa roshiago ga wakarimasu ka.

Hai, sukoshi wakarimasu.

Hon wa omoshiroi desu ka.

Taihen omoshiroi desu.
